Then I happened to be emailing with Dylan Beeson, founder of the boutique travel outfit, Travel-Well, who told me that he “drove around Costa Rica surfing and figuring out life during a life change several years ago—pura vida helped! The way I do Costa Rica,” he added, “is the way I design trips: hit Arenal first for a few days, then choose between Santa Teresa, Nosara or the Dominical/Ojochal area. All have their positives, and this way you get a jungle/beach experience.” A few of his recs:
“In the Santa Teresa area (white sand beaches, great surf, great restaurants, secret beach near Malpais, the waterfalls in Montezuma) I like Nantipa Resort (well appointed suites on one of the best beaches in Costa Rica). Surf right out your door with their lessons or walk down the beach for a day with Del Soul Surf Camp. Hermosa Treehouse is an architecturally interesting luxury treehouse in the jungle but close to a deserted beach. More notes: Eat Sushi at Nami. Sunset Happy hour at Cielo. Swiss Beach (Secret) is just east of the intersection as you head to Malpais. Hike to Cabo Blanco… stunning jungle hike that rewards you with a deserted white sand beach.
In Nosara (a large arching white sand beach, hillside dotted with smart hotels, yoga shalas and restaurants. Not easy to get to) there’s Surf Simply (if you want more than an instructor telling you to pop while he pushes you onto a wave, they take instruction to a much higher level, maintaining high standards for rooms and food). Note: Try La Luna for sunset and dinner. Fantastic mojitos and delicious people watching.
In Dominical/Uvita/Ojochal (Down the coast, over the famous Crocodile bridge, you come to old Costa Rica: dark, deserted beaches; Scarlet McCaws flying overhead. Osa Peninsula is close by, terrific surf.) Try Kalon Surf Camp (or if you don’t want to surf, sit by the pool watching toucans and sloths) or Kura Boutique Hotel (8 suites tucked into the jungle in Uvita—adults only.) Notes: Take a nature tour of Osa peninsula to see Sloths, Scarlet McCaws and tapirs. Go to Bamboo room at Alma de Ojochal hotel for sunset and live music.”
